Program Note:
Il Nostro Ragazzo Dolce was written for the Marshall High School Band in Illinois in memory of Andrew Keown, a former student in the band who tragically passed away from Addison’s disease in his early 20’s. The title ‘Il Nostro Ragazzo Dolce’ translates to ‘Our Sweet Boy’, what Drew’s parents always called him.
This piece is a moving tribute to Drew’s life, who is remembered strongly for his laugh, genuine smile, and positive aura. A bittersweet emotion is captured in the music through simple lyrical melodies and harmonic fluidity, frequently modulating and switching between uplifting major keys and more somber minor keys. The piece is bookended with solos of the main theme played by the baritone saxophone, Drew’s primary instrument in the band.
