Breakneck is a short concert opener written for the Jackson Northwest High School Wind Ensemble for their collaborative concert with the Western Michigan University Wind Symphony in 2022. The piece depicts the breakneck speeds of horse racing through a sprightly tempo and driving percussion, with frantic meter changes adding to the excitement and unpredictability of these contests.
